Don't try to save time by using a ruler or a metal tape measure. Material tape measures are soft and easy to wrap around the body, and should lay flat on the skin without making a mark or indent. If you don't have a soft tape measure, you could try using a non-stretching string or similar material, then carefully match it against a metal tape measure or ruler. But this requires concentration and accuracy.
